Electrochemical reduction of NO₂ studied by the use of cone-shaped electrodes

Abstract

The electrochemical reduction, in an all solid state cell, of NO₂ and O₂ on LSF (strontium substituted lanthanum ferrite) based electrodes has been studied using the cone-shaped electrode technique. It was shown that the reduction of NO₂ occurs much faster on LSF based electrodes than the reduction of O₂. The electrochemical reduction of NO₂ on LSF compounds is probably catalyzed by Fe(III) and oxide ion vacancies. The same seems to be true for the electrochemical reduction of O₂. The largest difference in current densities for the electrochemical reduction of NO₂ and O₂ was found for the compound LSF70 (La₀.₃Sr₀.₇FeO₃₋δ).
